Before she was my patron saint, St Edith Stein was raised in a devout Jewish household before abandoning her faith in college and embracing atheism. Edith's love of philosophy lead her to leave God behind, but eventually brought her back. She embraced Christianity and became a Carmelite nun and teacher. Because of her Jewish heritage, she was eventually taken to Auschwitz where she was murdered in the gas chamber.
